SUMMARY: Under close supervision ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring. Lifeguards will enforce pool policies and be able to communicate effectively why policies are in place. Provides customer service support, maintaining pool operations and equipment, and assisting with locker room and bathroom maintenance.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Recognizes and responds effectively in emergencies by activating the Emergency Action Plan (EAP).  
  • Actively guards and scans the pool area at all times; refrains from socializing while guarding. 
  • Communicates and enforces all district and pool policies and rules in a personable and professional manner.
  • Dresses and appearances are consistent with district standards including wearing your swimsuit, guard shirt, whistle and tube while on duty.
  • Provides customer service by aiding customers, responding to customer inquiries, addressing customer concerns or problems, educating customers on facility rules and procedures, and directing customers to appropriate persons or areas.
  • Completes general set up and take down pool furniture and equipment, including lane lines, cones, pool chairs, tables, and deck furniture.
  • Maintains pool operations and equipment by vacuuming the pool, scrubbing pool equipment and pool walls for sanitization purposes, operating the power wash machine to cleanse deck areas, removing debris from pool water, and picking up debris from deck areas.
  • Records daily participation numbers and assists in daily cleaning assignments including emptying trash cans, sweeping the deck, cleaning bathrooms, picking up spills, etc.  
  • Conducts pool inspections completes pool chemical logs and reports imbalances or concerns to the supervisor.  
  • Uses proper radio protocol and responds promptly, including radio communication to the front desk, building managers, and direct supervisors.  
  • Attends and participates in regular in-service training.  
  • Provides a welcoming environment for all patrons.  
  • Completes other duties as assigned or required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience:

  • No minimum education requirements. Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines.
  • Must be a minimum of 16 years or older. No experience required. A swim test is required and will be scheduled upon submission of the application.
  • Previous aquatic work experience, strong people skills and an athletic background are preferable.

 

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Required 
  • Current CPR/ First Aid/AED Certifications Required

 

Required Skills in:

  • Ability to recognize and respond to emergencies through knowledge and application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • Ability to enforce pool policies while providing a high level of customer service to students, faculty/staff, and community members.
  • Ability to display a positive attitude for all patrons and district staff.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manages their time and balance professional and personal commitments.  
  • Arrives prepared and on time for work and consistently demonstrates service excellence.  
  • Able to assess a situation and make an informed decision independently.  
  • Ability to work as a team with other lifeguards, facility staff and management.  

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons’ of various weights’ in distress.
  • Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing or walking for various lengths of time. 
  • Able to sit for extended period of time in direct sunlight.
  • Frequently required to swim, walk, sit, and talk, or hear.
  • Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Frequently required to lift to 20 pounds and occasionally lift, carry, push, pull and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance in order to perform pool rescues.
  • Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
