SUMMARY: Under close supervision, ensures the safety of students traveling by school bus by assisting them and the driver and maintaining bus supplies and a clean environment.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Assists with the transportation of students to and from school by helping them to their assigned seats and ensuring their seatbelts are fastened.
  • Monitors students’ conduct, is alert for emotional and physical conditions that may affect the safety and welfare of the students
  • Operates lift mechanisms. Maneuvers wheelchairs up ramps, curbs, and around inside of the bus without assistance.
  • Maintains order among students, supervising their behavior and enforcing district standards of conduct on the bus.
  • Completes attendance sheets.
  • Maintains bus supplies to include first aid kit and cleaning supplies. Administers first aid when necessary.
  • Cleans and sanitizes bus seats and windows; sweeps floors; empties trash receptacles.
  • Assists in conducting evacuation drills.
  • Must be sufficiently familiar with the route to assist a substitute driver in following the route.
  • Completes other duties as assigned or required.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; AND experience working with special needs children; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Required Licenses and Certifications:

  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card

 

Required Knowledge of:

  • District and Department policies and procedures.
  • Transportation safety regulations and requirements.

 

Required Skills in:

  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely.
  • Assisting special needs children.
  • Practicing methods involved in providing quality customer service.

 

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

  • Must possess an ability to push, pull, or lift weights in excess of 50 pounds and work in a sitting position for two to three hours without interruption.
  • Must be physically and emotionally able to cope with the problems and situations encountered when transporting passengers in ambulatory appliances, restraint systems, or with difficult behavior.
